What is Instructional Design?

Instructional design provides the blueprint for your training or course. Without a proper instructional design, your training might look good, but it may not be effective. Learning goals and objectives need to be aligned with the learning materials being presented. Many training programs fall short or are ineffective because there was no plan, no blueprint, and no foundation to build on.

Sound instructional design is the core of all the training I create. I start by asking questions to discover what the problems or “gaps” in job knowledge, skills or abilities may be to reach your training goals. In some cases after an initial needs analysis, we find that training may not even be needed and the problem resides in an existing process that needs to fixed, or that the issue may be solved with a simple job aid.

When designing courses, either instructor led or online, I focus on designing realistic activities that put learners in as close to on-the-job situations as possible. Learners need to know how they will use information they learn and training course is the perfect place to practice new skills and behaviors.

Experience

I have over 18 years of experience in learning design and development for world-class businesses. I’ve worked with US, Canadian, German, Swedish, and British clients in the private sector, as well as with the US military, the Internal Revenue Service and many US county and state agencies.

I began designing elearning with the first rapid learning tools on the market (Authorware, Trainersoft) and have used virtually every iteration of the popular rapid elearning tools today, including Articulate Engage, Storyline and Adobe Captivate. I have worked with every form of LMS and CMS, and can read, problem solve and do basic programming in PHP and HTML.

With the recent impact on the workforce due to Covid 19, my previous experience with creating virtual instructor led training (vILT) for global businesses has been a big help for those enterprises needing to quickly get their current instructor led training into a virtual classroom! It has given me great satisfaction to help organizations and their employees in this manner.
